Why are people addicted to drugs, alcohol and other vices like sex, porn, gambling, shopping and gaming?
Well, it is simple.
Addiction is not the problem it’s actually a solution to the problem. Think about that. What is the real problem? Imagine getting to the root cause of the issue and solving it.
The DSM-V teaches us that addiction or what they are now calling Substance Use Disorder is actually a mental health problem. But in reality, everybody has a vice. There is a difference between Use, Misuse and Abuse. We know that pretty much everybody has an addiction to either sugar, caffeine, or nicotine. If we follow this thought process, then we can say that addiction really isn’t the problem it’s a solution to a problem. What is your actual problem?
People can use drugs and alcohol, porn, gaming, shopping, and even food in excess, to the point it is detrimental. Instead of saying that addiction is a disease so that we can put it in the DSM V and dole out medication for you, let’s try a different thought process. Addiction is your solution to the problem and the reason you use drugs, alcohol, food, gaming, gambling, and even shopping as a way to make yourself feel better would fall under the following categories:
Number One it’s a coping mechanism to deal with the stressors in your life. That means this is something you reach for when you’re uncomfortable, to feel comfortable. If you feel sad you might reach for this item that you were taking in excess. If you feel happy you might reach for it to celebrate. If you’re in a bad mood you might reach for it to pull you out of a bad mood. The best example of this is cake, believe it or not. Happy times call for cake such as weddings, birthdays, celebrations. Sad times also call for cake. When your boyfriend dumps you and you’re reaching for the cake or even that vat of ice cream to make yourself feel better. Sugar is legal, cheap, and can be found in every gas station and grocery store in America. On top of that, it is in almost every product you can get on the shelves in the grocery store. Sugar is the gateway drug to everything else and it’s highly addictive. We get away with not addressing the sugar problem simply because it’s legal. Whereas marijuana, which has way more health benefits, is illegal and therefore shot down in society.
Number Two it’s a trauma response. A trauma response means utilizing drugs, alcohol, food, shopping, gaming, gambling or even sex. It’s your response to a trauma that keeps reoccurring in your life. This can be any trauma from a major trauma like rape, kidnapping, human trafficking or something as simple as your father calling you names when you were a child. Everyone processes trauma in a different way and has a different response to trauma. But the one thing we can agree on is that adverse childhood experiences can lead to addiction and abuse to make you feel better and safe. A good example of this would be a person who is abused by their father either physically or sexually or was raped in their early teens may in turn pick bad partners. They will pick partners that will gaslight them and abuse them remarkably similar to what happened as a child because that is what they know. They get addicted to the cycle and repeat the pattern.
Number Three: Is genetics. There is a genetic factor, or a predisposition to overuse drugs, alcohol and certain substances. If you have a history in your family of addiction to certain items, you can have a genetic coding to want more of something. Again, addiction is through all different types of items it can be drugs alcohol porn, sex, shopping, money, work, gambling, gaming pretty much anything at this point that you used to excess that can cause detrimental issues in your life can result in addiction.
Number Four: Is Environment. If you grow around certain things, they will seem normal or commonplace to you. For example, if your family drinks wine with dinner, you will see that as normal. If your family eats muffins and sugar cereal for breakfast, you will probably continue that pattern. It is part of your environmental influence.

People use drugs and alcohol for one of two reasons. To numb out, or because they’re bored. Generally, people that normally use drugs such as alcohol, marijuana, and opiates and benzo ‘s use to escape or numb out from life. Those that use because their bored, generally use uppers such as speed, diet pills, cocaine, and methamphetamine. Both types of addiction can be detrimental and take you down a rabbit hole if you are not careful. The bottom line is getting to the root cause of why you use and solving some of the issues so that they do not continue to occur. If we do that successfully you then will let your vice go and you’ll feel 10 times better.
