What Does a Sober Companion Actually do?

A sober companion or mental health support assistant has many functions, from helping you get groceries and food shopping (without the alcohol stop), to going to the gym with you and helping you get back on the healthy lifestyle track, to going to meetings (if you chose, not a requirement), help with triggers, coping skills, managing relationships, managing finances and more. A sober companion’s goal is to help you stay sober for a minimum period of time while you reintegrate into life with your newfound sobriety.

Most clients that are leaving inpatient treatment chose to have a sober companion or sober buddy with them for a few weeks as they reintegrate into their new sober lifestyle. A sober companion can be a short term or long-term relationship. Most sober companions work with you for 2 weeks to 30 days, but there are some sober companions that are with their clients for a year or more. It depends on what your goals and plans are. If you are only going to a high-stress event, like a wedding this weekend, and want extra support so you don’t drink, you might hire that sober companion for one day or two days to stay with you through the high-risk event.

They go by different names: Sober Companions, Travel Companions or Accompaniment, Sober Escorts, Recovery Assistants, Recovery Coaches or Sober Coaches, Addiction Coaches, and so on. These are individuals (and professionals) that have gone through numerous forms of addiction recovery training, and truly understand and can relate to addictive tendencies, cravings, behaviors, common manipulation tactics, and more. Our Sober Companions, Recovery Coaches, and Sobriety Coaches have undergone rigorous training, and have achieved National Certification. All our sober companions are Nationally Certified Sober Companions (NCSC) and Nationally Certified Recovery Coaches, (NCRC-II). Many hold degrees and additional certifications and training, and all are professionally insured…we are not your typical “just-out-of-rehab-last-year sober companion” who can’t keep a job and decides to become a recovery coach!

Our scope of sober companion, guidance, oversight, and travel accompaniment services is far more than that which is often referred to as sober sitting. Our certified sober companions at sober on demand, are unique in that, we are always taking a broad look ahead, and with vast expertise in assessing the many variables and contingencies that may await given the specifics of this situation. With that in mind, the client (and family) is assured that the recovery & addiction professionals here are benchmarks for excellence industry-wide. Simply put, we raised the bar on the gold standard of addiction and mental health treatment.

Do I Need a Sober Companion? Most people that are just coming out of an inpatient facility can benefit from a sober companion service that lives with them in their home for a period of time, usually 3-6 months. You can also hire a sober companion to drive you or accompany you to a high-risk event like a wedding, concert, meeting, or work function. If you have drug or alcohol tendencies and want extra support or even suffer from anxiety, an eating disorder or you are struggling to reintegrate into life, you can benefit from a sober companion.

What is a Sober Companion? Sober on Demand defines: An individual that has 5 years of sobriety is bonded, insured, and certified. They can live in your residence, and accompany you to events, work, gym, grocery, meetings, outings, and more and help you stay sober as you re-enter your life and the workforce. They can also accompany you as a sober escort to an event like a wedding, business meeting, or short-term event where a high-risk situation like drugs, alcohol, or sex will be present. A sober companion will help you overcome triggers, install coping skills, assist with budget/finance, daily living duties, and even help with anxiety, depression, mental health issues, and eating disorders. They are not babysitters and will provide as much help or as little as needed.

What is the difference between a Sober Companion and a Therapist? A sober companion is with you in person in your space (home, office, hotel) and for a specific length of time,  and can travel with you nationally and internationally. A therapist will meet you in their office for 1 hour at a time to discuss your issues or work by phone or the internet. Therapists are licensed and sober companions are nationally certified, insured, and bonded.

What is the difference between a sober companion and a sponsor? A 12 step sponsor is a peer that offers free, peer-driven support. A sober companion is a trained, certified, insured, and bonded professional individual that will assist from a professional standpoint and offer guidance, life skills, trigger management and assist with other duties. Sponsors have no real formal training other than having experienced an addiction, whereas certified sober companions have the lived experience as well both also have formal and professional training.

Do you need to be certified to be a sober companion? While there is no state or federal guideline, you should have 5 years of sobriety, be bonded, and be insured with experience. The Addictions Academy has offered the first national certification and credential as a certified sober companion.
